Dear Neighbor,

This is unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable.

SMCLC recently uncovered documents which reveal that a Santa Monica City Councilmember, who will be deciding the fate of the biggest development currently proposed in our city, has taken over 95% OF THE MONEY she needed to retire HER ENTIRE CAMPAIGN DEBT from that ONE DEVELOPER.

You read that right.  Councilmember Pam O’Connor retired more than 95% of her ENTIRE PREVIOUS CAMPAIGN DEBT with money from just ONE DEVELOPER:
The owners of the massive project on 26th and Olympic, (where the PaperMate building currently stands.)  And she took their money knowing this project will be coming before City Council for her approval!

And it gets worse.

Because Ms. O’Connor has done it before!

Unbelievably, before her last election in 2006, Ms. O’Connor also retired her previous campaign debt almost entirely with donations from a single developer, who also had the largest project pending in our city at the time.

In 2005, Ms. O’Connor collected payments from thirteen high-level executives of the Macerich Company, which owns Santa Monica Place.  These payments retired virtually her entire previous campaign debt.  Because of community outcry, the Santa Monica Place project was scaled back.  But the fact remains: Ms. O’Connor took that developer’s money then, as she has done now, at a time when she thought that project would be coming to Council for her approval.

Then help us send a message:  Taking large amounts of money from the biggest developers in town before you’re scheduled to vote on their projects, is wrong.  And it is unacceptable.

This November, Ms. O’Connor is seeking her fifth term on City Council.  Santa Monica voters need to know about her cozy relationship with developers before they cast their ballots.

Voters need to know that time after time, Ms. O’Connor has sided with developers over residents and even over Santa Monica’s renters.

Awareness of Ms. O’Connor’s record even caused a majority of rank-and-file members of Santa Monicans for Renters Rights to OPPPOSE her endorsement for another term at its recent convention.

SMRR members know what all Santa Monicans need to know.  Please help us reach voters, by making a contribution.
